That’s what gospel great Mahalia Jackson told Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. when he was searching for the right words to describe the culmination that took place on August 28, 1963. The 34-year-old reverend from Atlanta took Mahalia’s wise counsel and delivered an indelible speech that will live on until the end of time. According to Sigmund Freud, our dreams are unconscious wishes in disguise. There’s no doubt that Dr. King wanted equality and freedom for his people and for everyone, a fact that needed no concealment. In celebration of Dr. King’s 85th birthday, the dream is as complex as ever. But sometimes, all we have to hold on to are dreams. And if we wait long enough, they just might come true.
